Lagos CP Orders The Dismissal Of Police Officer Who Killed Unarmed Civilian
The Nigerian Police Force, Lagos State Command has ordered the dismissal of a Police Sergeant, Lukmon Akanbi (F/No 448407) who shot and killed an unarmed civilian in Lagos.
The Commissioner of Police in the state, Hakeem Odumosu, authorized the dismissal and arrest of the police officer for professional misconduct.
It was gathered that, the victim a 39 year old Ramon Babatunde Adeniyi met his untimely death on Thursday at about 4am while returning from an event around Eko Atlantic Victoria Island, Lagos. There was a report of fracas between the Police Officer who was on patrol at the area and the victim who was returning from an event.
The Police image maker in the state DSP Bala Elkana, confirmed the incident in a press statement released on Thursday.
Elkana noted that the Police Officer had pulled the trigger of his pistol on the unarmed civilian, which contravenes professional standards on the use of Firearms.
While effort to save the victim proved abortive as he was pronounced dead on arrival at the Naval Dockyard Hospital.

The Police Sergeant was however, arrested and detained at the Provost Department, Command Headquarters, Ikeja after which he was subsequently subjected to internal disciplinary proceedings known as Orderly Room Trials. He was arraigned before the Adjudicating Officer on three counts charge of Discreditable Conduct contrary to Paragraph E (3) First Schedule, Unlawful and Unnecessary Exercise of Authority contrary to Paragraph Q (2), and Damage to Articles contrary to Paragraph D (1), Police Act and Regulations, Cap 370 LFN 1990.
He was found guilty of all the charges and given a sentence of dismissal from the Nigeria Police. And was subsequently handed over to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Yaba for prosecution in conventional Court.
The State’s CP stressed that any professional misconduct would not be tolerated among police officers while expressing his profound condolences to the families of the victim adding that, justice would prevail.
