Lagos Crackdown: Roadside Livestock Sales Face Strict Enforcement

Unhygienic and Dangerous Practices
Eko Hot Blog reports that in a move to uphold environmental and public health standards, the Lagos State Task Force, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, has launched a crackdown on the indiscriminate and illegal display and sale of livestock by the roadside and other unapproved locations.

The enforcement exercise, led by the agency’s Chairman, CSP Shola Jejeloye, kicked off at Agege Ram Market, where dozens of livestock were evacuated and taken to the Lagos State Abattoir market for proper health verification.
Stern Warnings from Authorities
Jejeloye condemned the activities of the animal traders, describing them as “unhygienic and dangerous not only to the sellers and buyers but also to commuters and vehicle operators along that axis.”
He warned, “From this location, it is clear that these animals have not been properly barricaded from the road, therefore it is very easy for one ram to lose control and jump onto the road, which could lead to accidents.”
Compliance with Regulations
Furthermore, Jejeloye advised other operators scattered across the state to heed the warning and ensure that their livestock are properly tested and displayed at approved locations before being sold to the public.
“Any operator caught endangering the lives of Lagosians through their selfish business activities would have their livestock seized and forfeited to the State Government,” he cautioned.
Ministry of Environment’s Stance
Echoing similar sentiments, Dr. Kofoworola Oloritun, the Head of Monitoring, Enforcement, and Compliance at the Lagos State Ministry of Environment, remarked, “We have issued warnings to these operators severally, but they fell on deaf ears.”
She emphasized the need for proper inspection to determine if the animals are disease-free before being displayed for sale.

Consequences for Non-Compliance
“The animals evacuated from the illegal market will be properly analyzed here at the abattoir before having stakeholders’ meetings with their owners and enlightened on the need to adhere to the laid-down laws regarding the sale of livestock,” Oloritun stated, adding that appropriate fines would be issued to the operators of the illegal markets before handing over the livestock to them.
