Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a bid to prioritize safety and order, the Lagos State Government has resumed the demolition of illegal extensions within the Idumota market.
This action comes in the wake of the recommendations made by the Docemo fire incident committee, chaired by Gbenga Oyerinde, the Commissioner for Special Duties.

According to Jubril Gawat, the media aide to Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, “Lagos state government continues the removal of illegal extensions in markets in Lagos Island to ensure safety, orderliness and opening up of the free flow of traffic.”
He further revealed that the illegal extensions were initially removed but had been rebuilt by defaulters.
The demolition exercise is being carried out by a combined team comprising various enforcement agencies, including Special Duties, Physical Planning, Environment, Urban Development, LASTMA, LASBCA, LNSC, KAI, CBD, LASURA, Lagos Fire Service, and the Nigerian Police Force.
“The illegal extensions removed before were rebuilt by the defaulters,” Gawat stated.
This move comes in the aftermath of devastating fires that ravaged the Idumota market area, destroying shops, warehouses, and residential buildings.
Following the incidents, Governor Sanwo-Olu condemned the conversion of residential buildings into storage facilities for flammable materials and ordered the indefinite closure of the market.
