Lagos Govt To Demolish 280 Unauthorized Structures

The Lagos State government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has announced plans to demolish 280 illegal structures in an effort to protect the state’s master plan and prevent the formation of slums.

The Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, Ekundayo Alebiosu, confirmed the decision in a statement on Tuesday, highlighting the government’s concern over the degradation of coastal areas, particularly in the Mayegun Waterfront Scheme in Eti Osa Local Government Area.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that according to Alebiosu, notices have already been issued to the owners and occupants of the affected properties, requiring them to submit relevant approvals and documentation within seven days.

Failure to do so will result in demolition orders. These properties include completed buildings, constructions in progress, and undeveloped plots, all of which were found to lack government authorization following a thorough evaluation by the Ministry’s survey team.

Alebiosu encouraged property owners to either voluntarily remove their illegal structures or regularize their documents to avoid facing penalties. He warned that the state will no longer tolerate encroachment on government land or illegal activities in waterfront areas.

In addition, the government is addressing similar encroachments at the Okun Ajah Waterfront Scheme and is actively working to resolve these issues.
