Despite having paid for a prepaid meter, Hamzat claims that Eko DisCo has made it challenging for him to transition from estimated billing to a metered system.
“I bought a meter so I won’t keep getting estimated bills, but converting it has been a serious challenge,” Hamzat lamented.
He described the situation as a reflection of the widespread suffering among Lagosians due to overbilling, citing an example of a resident in Surulere’s Coker Aguda area who received a N2.8 million electricity bill—more than his N2 million annual rent.
“Our people are suffering because of estimated billing,” he said.
Hamzat spoke on behalf of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu during th signing ceremony for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Lagos State Government and the Rural Electrification Agency (REA), which focused on expanding electricity access to rural communities in the state.
Commending Energy Commissioner Biodun Ogunleye for facilitating the partnership, Hamzat described the MoU as a step toward a more stable and inclusive power supply in Lagos State.
Ogunleye further elaborated on the collaboration with REA, noting that it would unlock new opportunities for underserved communities and solidify Lagos’ position as a leader in renewable energy development.
