Lagos Drainage Worker Stuck Underground During Maintenance
Eko Hot Blog reports that a maintenance operation in Lagos’s underground drainage system at Onipanu Bus stop took a harrowing turn on Monday as a worker became trapped underground.
The worker, engaged in routine maintenance work, encountered difficulties and found himself unable to exit the tunnel.
According to the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency, Dr. Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, LASEMA activated its emergency response plans following a message on the distress situation of a drainage worker.
Oke-Osanyintolu, in a statement, said investigations revealed that an adult male de-silting drainages at Onipanu Bus Stop in an attempt to clear a blocked portion, accessed the underground tunnel and got trapped.
He said, “Further investigation revealed that the man was a drain duck worker employed by LAMATA.
“The LASEMA response team and all emergency responders are working assiduously to rescue the trapped victim from the underground drainage.”
“The operation commenced at 4.25 pm and sophisticated equipment was deployed in the penetrative of the manhole to save the worker’s life, while strategic efforts were also being employed to block off, and divert the inflow of water from the Ilupeju axis to reduce the volume of underground fluids.
The search and rescue operation is still ongoing.”
