Lagos Government To Implement Logistic Routes For Trucks

• Lagos State Government set to implement channels separate for trucks to drive on in response to repeated accidents on its roads.

• The plan was revealed by the Commissioner of Transportation, Dr. Oladeinde in the stakeholders’ meeting.

• Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Abdulhafiz Toriola also assures of the willingness to collaborate with relevant truck operators to ensure drivers are well trained before taking to the road. 

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos State Government plans to implement logistic routes for trucks and articulated vehicles, as part of the state’s Transport Master Plan, in a bid to curb recurring accidents on roads within the City.

The Commissioner for Transportation, Dr. Frederic Oladeinde, revealed the plan at a stakeholders’ meeting, where he emphasized the importance of safety and security for Lagosians.

The Commissioner noted that in order to reduce truck accidents, stakeholders would gather periodically to develop strategies to prevent such incidents.

He also stated that a combination of policies, such as erecting truck barriers, complying with minimum safety standards, and restricting the movement of articulated vehicles to designated routes, would be implemented to address the problem.

The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Transportation, Mr. Abdulhafiz Toriola, explained the proposed logistic routes for trucks and articulated vehicles.

He stated that the government was considering implementing the use of designated routes as one of the strategies to regulate the activities of trucks plying the state’s roads.

Mr. Toriola also mentioned that the Ministry was reviewing the Minimum Safety Standard Procedure (SSP) for trucks and articulated vehicles being implemented by the Nigerian Ports Authority (NPA) and may modify the SSP to include the participation of Vehicle Inspection Service (VIS) and Federal Road Safety Commission (FRSC) officials in the inspection process.

In addition, the Permanent Secretary expressed the government’s willingness to collaborate with relevant truck operators to ensure that truck drivers are well-trained and only qualified drivers are allowed to operate trucks within the state.
