Eko Hot Blog reports that two residents of a two-storey building in the Ebute-Metta area of Lagos State have died after the collapse of the structure.
The Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Authority (LASEMA), Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, disclosed the development in a statement on Friday.
The building collapsed earlier on Friday, trapping at least three yet-to-be-identified persons, including a baby and two adults.
The Director, Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, Margaret Adeseye, earlier revealed that the agency received a distressed call around 9 am on Friday about a building collapse in Herbert Macaulay Way, Ebute-Metta.
When the fire service team arrived at the scene, one person was rescued, while three others were trapped under the debris.
In a follow-up update, the LASEMA boss confirmed that two persons died in the accident while one person was rescued.
He added that other occupants escaped when the building gave signs of collapsing, noting that the cause of the collapse is still unknown.
“The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency has deployed its emergency response plan to the scene of a collapsed two-storey residential building with a penthouse,” Oke-Osanyintolu said.
“The cause of the collapse is still unknown. One adult male has been rescued, two recovered dead, while other occupants escaped when the building gave signs of collapsing.”
