Lagos Govt Orders Partial Removal Of Unapproved Buildings In Lagos Island

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos State government through the Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development has ordered the sealing and removal of illegal structures in Lagos Island as part of measures to enforce the state physical planning laws and regulations.

The Commissioner for Physical Planning and Urban Development, Dr. Oluyinka Olumide, gave the directive during an enforcement exercise in the area.

He reiterated the government’s pledge to maintain zero tolerance for all illegal buildings and constructions across the state.

Olumide directed the sealing and partial removal of block works of unapproved buildings in Odunlami, Upper-Campos, Tokunbo, Oshodi, Okepopo, Ita-Faaji and Pasi Square among other axis of the city.

The commissioner advised owners of distressed buildings to effect their renovation or face removal.

Specifically, he gave a two-week ultimatum to owners of Mumuni-Oloko Mosque in the Okepopo area to embark on non-destructive tests and make necessary renovations, adding that the distressed age-long structure constitutes danger to worshippers if left unattended to.

The government said that the enforcement exercise was necessary to enhance the sustainability of the built environment, prevent building collapse and protect lives and property.

Olumide said: “This exercise that has started on Lagos Island will be a continuous one that will take us to other local councils of the state. We shall comb every nook and cranny of Lagos to rid the state of illegal building constructions.”

Other officials who took part in the exercise include the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development, Oluwole Sotire and the General Manager, Lagos State Physical Planning Permit Authority, (LASPPPA), Mr. Kehinde Osinaike.
