Lagos Has Enough Blood To Meet Emergency Needs, Says LSBTS

Eko Hot Blog reports that Lagos State Government has the capacity to provide timely and adequate supply of safe blood and blood products in the event of emergencies and disasters.

This is according to the Executive Secretary of the Lagos State Blood Transfusion Service (LSBTS), Dr. Bodunrin Osikomaiya, who said that the state government has developed a comprehensive emergency plan to ensure that safe blood is available to those in need during disasters.

The LSBTS is responsible for coordinating the activities of public and private blood banks, blood donation centers, and third-party logistics companies in the event of a disaster. The agency also has a network of ambulances and motorcycles that can be used to transport blood to hospitals and disaster sites.

Dr. Osikomaiya said that the LSBTS has a constant stock of blood for emergencies, including blood group O Rhesus negative blood, which does not need to be cross-matched before transfusion. The agency also has a well-organized communication system in place to ensure that blood is quickly delivered to those in need.

She added that the LSBTS is the only state in Nigeria with a policy on automation in screening blood for transfusion transmissible infections. This ensures that the blood is safe for patients.

Dr. Osikomaiya said that the LSBTS has successfully implemented its emergency plan during two recent public disasters, the Ita-faaji and BRT bus-train collision accidents. In both cases, the LSBTS was able to provide timely and adequate supply of safe blood to the victims.

She noted that the LSBTS has collected over 82,000 units of blood through its licensed private and public blood banks as of August 2023. This is a 17% increase from the number of units collected a year ago.

Dr. Osikomaiya said that the LSBTS is committed to ensuring that there is always a safe and adequate supply of blood available in Lagos State in the event of an emergency.
