The Lagos State Government has issued an order to remove all illegal structures on the Gbagada Wetland, located opposite TREM in Kosofe Local Government Area.
The wetland, currently under development into Maverick Estate by an unnamed property developer, has been flagged for violation of environmental laws.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab, gave the demolition order on Friday during an inspection of drainage projects in Ikeja and Gbagada.
He stressed that constructing on wetlands is “a recipe for crisis and disaster,” and ordered that the site be sealed. Wahab emphasized that wetlands play a vital role in absorbing rainwater and preventing flooding, and any construction in such areas threatens the environment.
“We have issued a 24-hour removal notice to the developers and requested they present key documents, such as wetland clearance, drainage certificates, and Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) certificates,” Wahab stated. He added that the government will not grant any approval for construction on the wetland.
The commissioner highlighted the risks of ignoring environmental regulations, noting that global warming and severe weather events, such as the flooding in northern Nigeria, make it essential to protect Lagos’ natural drainage systems.
“We can’t play the ostrich with these issues; protecting wetlands is critical to managing stormwater and preventing environmental disasters,” he added.
In addition to the Gbagada wetland, Wahab inspected the progress of drainage works under System 1, which includes lining and sheet piling from Sheraton to the Maryland/Ojota Bridge, ensuring that these critical drainage systems remain secure.

Wahab also reiterated the state’s ongoing enforcement efforts to remove illegal structures across Lekki, Ikorodu, Badagry, and other areas, stating that compliance has been improving but would continue to be strictly enforced to protect Lagos’ environment.
