The Lagos State Government has made significant strides in strengthening its public service through extensive training programs and the implementation of a new minimum wage of N85,000.

Eko Hot Blog reports that Afolabi Ayantayo, the Commissioner for Establishments and Training, detailed these efforts during a ministerial briefing commemorating Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s second term’s second anniversary.

Ayantayo explained that the government focused on three main areas: human capital development, industrial harmony, and public service reforms.

Between May 2022 and December 2024, over 23,420 civil servants participated in more than 185 targeted training programs.

These initiatives were designed to improve efficiency, leadership capacity, and digital competence within the public sector.

As part of the government’s commitment to workforce capacity enhancement, more than 8,000 officers were granted study leave, 564 attended professional conferences, and 25 were selected for the AIG Public Leadership Programme at the University of Oxford.

Additionally, 50 officers were onboarded under the newly introduced Public-Private Sector Exchange Programme, which aims to promote knowledge transfer and collaboration between public institutions and private sector organizations.

The Lagos State Government’s investment in training programs and implementation of a new minimum wage demonstrates its dedication to fostering a highly skilled and fairly compensated public workforce.

In January 2024 Ayantayo said a wage award of N35,000 increased the minimum wage to N71,750. A subsequent review in October 2024 raised the minimum wage to N85,000, with implementation beginning in November 2024.

In addition to these wage increases, Ayantayo noted that several financial interventions were introduced in the health sector.

These include the payment of medical residency training funds, rural allowances for primary health workers, and the implementation of revised CONMESS and CONHESS salary structures.

As part of a major restructuring initiative, the government approved a comprehensive redundancy package for 391 employees who were disengaged from the Lagos State Water Corporation.

Ayantayo described the reforms as evidence of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s resolve to reposition the state’s public service as an institution of excellence. “We are building not just a capable workforce, but a forward-looking, ethical, and performance-driven system that delivers results for all Lagosians,” he said.
