Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government has intensified efforts to clear illegal structures obstructing drainage channels in the state.
The enforcement team from the Drainage Enforcement and Compliance Department of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources continued the removal of illegal structures built on the canal path and alignment along the System 156 drainage channel.
The affected areas include Orchid Estate, Ajiran, and Agungi, where structures were found to be encroaching on the drainage channel’s path and alignment. The ongoing enforcement exercise is part of the state’s proactive measures to address the persistent issue of flooding and prepare for the upcoming rainy season.
According to a statement posted on the official Facebook page of the Honourable Commissioner for Environment, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, the removal of illegal properties in Lagos State is aimed at finding lasting solutions to the recurring flooding challenges faced by residents.
The enforcement team’s efforts are expected to improve the flow of water through the drainage channels, reducing the risk of flooding during heavy rainfall. By clearing obstructions and restoring the channels to their intended capacity, the state aims to mitigate the impact of flooding on communities and infrastructures.
The exercise also serves as a reminder to Lagos residents and property owners to comply with regulations and refrain from erecting structures on drainage channels or paths designated for water flow. Such actions not only contribute to flooding but also put lives and properties at risk.
As the rainy season approaches, the Lagos State Government remains committed to taking necessary measures to ensure the safety and well-being of its citizens. Residents are encouraged to cooperate with the authorities and report any illegal activities or obstructions that may hinder the proper functioning of drainage systems.
