Lagos Minimum Wage Raised To ₦85,000, Set To Reach ₦100,000 By January

The Governor of Lagos State, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, has officially announced an increase in the minimum wage for civil servants in the state to ₦85,000. Sanwo-Olu made this disclosure during an interview with Channels Television on Wednesday, October 16, 2024.

Speaking on the wage hike, the governor explained that the decision followed extensive discussions with labor unions in Lagos and was driven by the high cost of living in the state.

EKO HOT BLOG reports that he acknowledged that Lagos residents face a premium cost of living compared to other parts of the country.

“I’m glad to let you know that the minimum wage for Lagos, which we have discussed with our union, is ₦85,000 today,” Sanwo-Olu stated. “It is not a competition. I am not going to say that we are paying more than some people; it is a function of affordability and capacity.”

Sanwo-Olu also hinted at further wage increases, expressing his hope to raise the minimum wage to ₦100,000 by January 2025, ensuring that workers in Lagos receive a living wage.

“I will want to come back in January and say that I have been able to increase the minimum wage of Lagos to ₦100,000, not because I want to make anybody look bad, but because I want my people to have a living wage,” he added.

This development comes after the Federal Government earlier in the year approved a ₦70,000 minimum wage for civil servants nationwide, following negotiations with organized labor, including the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC).

Sanwo-Olu’s announcement is expected to further improve the welfare of civil servants in Lagos State, making it one of the states with the highest minimum wage in the country.
