The Lagos State Ministry of Transportation has united to support the 2024 campaign against Domestic and Sexual Violence.
The campaign aims to address the increasing incidents of Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV) in the state.
On Monday, the ministry’s management and staff, led by Permanent Secretary Maroof Olawale Musa, gathered in solidarity with survivors of gender-based violence (GBV).
They demonstrated their commitment by donning purple attire and showing their support through hashtags #SGVBTurnAlausaPurple, #SGVBNotOnMyWatch, and #LagosMOT on their official Twitter page.
This public show of unity aligns with a key initiative outlined by the National Human Rights Commission (NHRC).
The NHRC emphasized the importance of raising awareness and sensitizing communities about GBV through media and accessible formats.
By participating in this campaign, the ministry reinforced its stance against gender-based violence and highlighted its commitment to supporting survivors.
The NHRC, established by the NHRC Act of 1995 (as amended), works to promote and protect human rights, advance gender equality, and empower women.
As part of its mandate, the Commission has made the rights of women and related issues a key focus area.
The Centre for Women’s Health and Information (CEWHIN) highlighted the severity of GBV in its NHRC manual for GBV Response Guidance.
According to CEWHIN, GBV manifests in various forms, including intimate partner violence, sexual assault, isolation, and economic exclusion, affecting individuals both in private and public settings.
CEWHIN noted that GBV is a global pandemic, affecting one in three women throughout their lives and representing one of the most pervasive human rights violations worldwide.
