The letter marked, NANNM/LS/SSG/02/VOL.1/101, was signed by the NANNM Lagos chapter, Oloruntoba Odumosu, and was made available to our correspondent on Monday.

The letter was titled, ‘Agitations and Challenges of Nurses and Midwives in Lagos State: Request to See Mr. Governor.’

“We have written and met with the relevant government agencies on several occasions on some of these issues for prompt intervention without satisfactory results. We have equally made several attempts to meet the state’s Head of Service without success.

“We believe that despite the increasing workload and the daily sacrifice of nurses and midwives in Lagos State to ensure the health care system continues to be responsive and effective especially in this challenging period of the pandemic, the government has not demonstrated any genuine concern for our welfare and working condition,” the letter partly reads.

Some of the agitations of the nurses include, addressing the acute shortage of nurses and midwives in the state; high attrition rate and the need for retention allowance; retrospective approval and regularisation for nurses; improvement in working condition, environment, and essential amenities for nurses; improvement of health care infrastructure, replacement of obsolete hospital equipment and adequate provision of consumables.
