Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Police Command has initiated an investigation into an incident of extortion involving one of its officers, ASP Luka Bashayi from the Ogudu Area Command.
The investigation follows the circulation of a viral video on social media, showcasing the officer allegedly extorting money from a motorist.
In the video, ASP Luka Bashayi is heard instructing the driver to “make am N10,000, sharp sharp and go now,” while the motorist responds, “I no get.” The officer is also observed calling out some digits during the interaction.
The video, which quickly gained traction on social media, prompted a response from the Force Public Relations Officer, ACP Olumuyiwa Adejobi. He condemned the incident, stating, “This is not allowed, so shameful. It’s condemned. We need more info about this. We will fish him out.”
Further updates on the matter were provided by the Lagos State Police Public Relations Officer, SP Benjamin Hundeyin. He revealed that the command’s Complaint Response Unit has commenced investigations into the incident.
In a social media post, SP Hundeyin emphasized the commitment of the police to address the issue, stating, “We will not gloss over this. He is ASP Luka Bashayi, serving at Ogudu Area Command.”
The investigation signifies the police command’s determination to address cases of misconduct within its ranks and maintain public trust. The outcome of the investigation will likely lead to appropriate disciplinary actions if the officer is found culpable of extortion, highlighting the importance of accountability within law enforcement agencies.
