Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Police Command has arrested one Benjamin Ezeukwe aged 28 for masterminding and fleecing “hundreds of innocent Nigerians” in an elaborate cement-price-slash scam.
The command’s spokesperson, SP Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed the suspect’s arrest in a statement on Sunday.
Ezeukwe had sometimes in September 2023 allegedly released an advert purportedly belonging to Dangote Cement claiming that the company had reduced the price of cement to customers.
“As per the commitment made to reduce prices and following a periodic review of our operations for efficiency, the management of DANGOTE Cement wishes to announce and inform our esteemed customers, stakeholders, and the public that effective October 9, 2023, Dangote Cement would be sold at a promotional factory price of 2,410 Naira per bag so that Nigerians can begin to enjoy the benefits of the promotion price,” the fake advertorial reads in part.
He attached a phone number (08039691980) to the statement which the police alleged was used for the scam.
The Lagos police command revealed that it arrested the suspect on October 19, 2023 in Rumuolumeni area of Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers State with various exhibits, including a SIM card of the phone number he used to advance the alleged fraud.
“Benjamin was arrested on October 19, 2023 in Rumuolumeni area of Obio/Akpor local government area of Rivers State following weeks of intensive investigation by officers of Area A Command of the State Command,” the police statement reads.
“Found in his possession were one Tecno phone, one IPhone, three SIM cards including that of 08039691980 which he used for the scam and a Toyota Avalon, which investigation revealed to be a proceed of his crime.”
The police alleged that Ezeukwe had in September 2023 created “a bogus but convincing online advert purportedly by Dangote Cement, claiming a massive price slash.”
They further alleged that unsuspecting customers fell prey to the scam, losing millions of Naira to the suspect.
“Investigation has so far revealed that the suspect had perpetrated several other similar scams. Suspect has since been arraigned,” the statement added.
