EKO HOT BLOG reports that in the ongoing campaign against Sexual and Gender-Based Violence (SGBV), the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has inducted people into the ‘KINGS CLUB’ across Lagos.

Dr. Obafemi Hamzat, the state’s Deputy Governor, who performed the induction at Oregun Road in Ikeja, said the event has become a call to action for all Nigerians, and that they all have a role to play in ending SGBV.

The royal club project is critical for reorienting young pupils and their peers to avoid all sorts of violence, especially bullying and body shaming. This will also inspire young pupils to speak up and report inappropriate behavior to the relevant authorities,” he said.

While congratulating DSVA on the initiative, the Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice Lagos State, Mr. Moyosore Jubril Onigbanjo (SAN) emphasised that statistics revealed that in Nigeria 1 in 8 boys experience at least one violent encounter before the age of 18, while 61per cent of the affected child does not know where to seek assistance or services.

He added that the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Response Team (DSVRT) in partnership with the Nigeria correctional service have also embarked on research with a view to unraveling the tactics used by sex offenders through profiling.

Speaking with one of the facilitators, Mr. Adedayo Adetunji, young students have been trained on anger management, peaceful manner of communication, peaceful negotiation and lobbying.

Adebayo said: “They were thought respect for the other sex and sex education and gender role. It was an initiative to get to the grassroots and make the young students leaders of tomorrow and they go back to their various schools as ambassadors to teach their mates.”
