Lagos Set To Enhance Funding For Women Empowerment

Lagos State Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada has said that the time to take all issues concerning women in Lagos to the next level is now.

She made the statement during a courtesy visit by Exco members of supervisors for Women Affairs and Poverty in the 57 Local Governments/Local Council Development Areas to her office.

Dada opined that poverty alleviation and empowerment has gone beyond buying sewing machines, grinding machines and popcorn making machines, saying there is a tendency to give such tools to the same set of people repeatedly and the items might end up being sold.

She suggested that Chairmen/Women of various work groups should forward names of persons who have been adequately trained in various skills to the government for consideration as beneficiaries of the wealth creation funding set aside for women.

The Commissioner called for a database of women who are indeed poor and desperately in need of help in each Local Government area, urging the representatives of W.A.P.A in the local councils to identify such individuals and help them out of poverty.

“Exco members of WAPA in Local Governments should encourage women in their Local Governments to take advantage of the loans provided by Lagos State Employment Trust Fund to start-up small scale business,” she said.
