Lagos Sharpens Nurses’ Skills For Top-Notch Maternal Care

• Training Focuses on Latest Advancements in Maternal and Newborn Care

• Collaboration with “Smiles For Mothers” to Reduce Maternal Mortality

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Primary Health Care Board (LSPHCB), through the Directorate of Nursing Services, has organised a training programme for Nursing Officers in Charge (OIC) of its 24-hour Flagship Facilities.

The training, held in three batches from April 3rd to 5th, 2024, at the NANNM House, Alausa Ikeja, is aimed at equipping nurses with the latest advancements and best practices in essential maternal and newborn care.

In his remarks at the commencement of the training on Wednesday, Dr. Abimbola Bowale, Permanent Secretary, Lagos Health District IV, who is also the Supervising PS for LSPHCB, emphasised the state’s commitment to enhancing healthcare at the grassroots level. “He highlighted the importance of training for nurses, who form a large portion of healthcare professionals to ensure that they stay updated with the latest advancements in the field.”

Dr. Bowale further explained that the training seeks to improve communication skills, proper use of relevant equipment in labour management and other new technology used in modern maternal and newborn care.

Earlier in her welcome address, the Director of Nursing Services, Mrs. Anne Oyesanya encouraged the participants to participate and learn from the sessions. “In her words: “This update equips you with the knowledge, skills and resources necessary to provide the highest standard of care to newborns within your communities. Continuous learning is essential in healthcare, and this programme is designed to update your existing knowledge while introducing you to the latest evidence-based approaches in maternal and newborn care”.”

The training organised in collaboration with “Smiles For Mothers” focused on improving maternal and newborn health outcomes, reducing mortality and morbidity, and upskilling midwives in effective communication.
