Lagos Sports Summer Camp: Students, Instructors Recount Beautiful Experiences

The campers at the Lagos Sports Summer Camp on Thursday recounted their beautiful experiences with many excited with learning new things outside the walls of their schools.

The campers, instructors, and students told journalists on the sidelines of the closing ceremony of the Summer Camp that they were grateful to the government for the opportunity to be exposed many skills apart from academics.

The Lagos State Government had organised a six-day Sports Summer Camp for children between the ages of nine and 16 in the state.
The Sports Summer Camp among the five divisions known as IBILE which are Ikeja, Badagry, Ikorodu, Lagos Island and Epe, was held at the Teslim Balogun Stadium, Surulere.

The six-day event was aimed at exposing the participants to some sports which are: Athletics, Table-Tennis, Basketball, Taekwondo, Judo, Swimming, Squash and Volleyball.

Aside the sports the campers were also engaged in arts and craft, entrepreneurship, reading, and other extra-curricular activities.

Adekoya Kehinde, 16, from Eko Akete Senior Secondary School, Ajele, who participated in Table Tennis, said she was satisfied with the coaching and mentoring giving to them during the summer camp.

“I want to thank Lagos State for this opportunity because we really had good time during our stay in camp.

“I participated in playing table tennis for the first time and the experience was very good. The coaches are patient with us in teaching the basics,” she said
.
The best student in Table Tennis, Mutiat Ladejobi, a student of Falomo Senior High School, added that she would consider making table tennis the sport of her choice.

“I hope to continue playing table tennis from now because I now have a good experience playing the game. The coaches are very encouraging and I hope to see myself representing Lagos State in the future.

“My coach has promised to see to my development as a player,” she stated.

Oregun Senior High School, Alausa, Student, Mustapha Mubarak, said that Judo had taught him more of how he can defend himself,
adding that discipline was the key.

“We are taught to be disciplined in the class, all the instructors were very nice to us. We were also taught team bonding and how to cooperate within ourselves.

“I am able to develop good relationships with everyone around me because of the words of encouragement I got from the tutors,” he said.
An instructor on Tie and Dye from Ikorodu, with 21 students, Oluwabusolami Adefuye, said exposing the young ones to the process of arts and craft was the best thing for them.

“It is such a good idea having the young ones around to teach them tie and dye, the students are very good in what they are doing and many of them catch up quickly.

`One of the best legacy to give the young ones is to teach them how to be self-independent at early stage. The practical by this students will ever remain with them,” she said.

A table tennis coach, Ganiyu Kadri, said the student were teachable, adding that those discovered to be outstanding would be encouraged.
