Lagos State Empowers Over 250 Residents With Entrepreneurial Skills

Eko Hot Blog reports that in a bid to combat poverty and enhance the livelihoods of women, girls, and youths, the Lagos State Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation (WAPA) has successfully trained and launched over 250 residents into the entrepreneurial sector.

The initiative, encompassing a four-week short-term Skills Acquisition program, aimed to equip participants with the necessary skills to become financially independent.

The graduation ceremony for the participants was held at Ojo Square in Somolu Local Government and was conducted in collaboration with the Lagos State Health Management Authority.

The program specifically targeted people living with disabilities who had registered in the Ilera Eko Scheme, providing them with livelihood support to foster financial independence.

Commissioner for WAPA, Mrs. Cecilia Dada, emphasized the program’s objective to uplift the lives of indigents, vulnerable populations, internally displaced persons, and people with disabilities across various communities in Lagos State.

The training covered a diverse range of skills, including Events Decoration, Flower Arrangement, Fabric Stoning, Tie and Dye, Catering, Soap, Pomade, and Insecticide Production, Hair Braiding and Wig Making, as well as Throw Pillows and Duvet Making.

The first phase of the training, which took place concurrently across five centers, including Ojo Square in Somolu, LASEMA IDP Camp in Igando, Bonny Camp in Victoria Island, Foursquare Church Omole Phase I in Iru-Victoria Island, and Muri–Okunola in Eti-osa Local Government Area, successfully equipped participants with practical skills to meet economic demands and challenges.

Commending the participants for their commendable conduct, resilience, determination, and commitment, Commissioner Cecilia Dada urged them to establish sustainable businesses through discipline and accountability.  

She reassured residents that the State Government is committed to addressing factors hindering women and youths from reaching their full potentials, offering necessary support irrespective of their positions in the State.

Dr. Emmanuella Zamba, Permanent Secretary of Lagos State Health Management Authority (LASHMA), represented by Mr. Olatunji Rotimi, applauded Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu for his unwavering support in leaving no one behind in the T.H.E.M.E.S Plus Agenda.

He encouraged beneficiaries to embrace discipline and dedication in their work to ensure success.

Mr. Kayode Oludare, Vice Chairman of Ifako Community Development Association, lauded the Ministry of Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation for its efforts in enhancing human capacities for self-sustainability.
