Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government has revealed plans to institute the Lagos State Essential Medicines Agency (LSEMA) to promote impeccable distribution and management of essential medicines in Lagos State.
This development was made known by the state commissioner for health, Professor Akin Abayomi during the year 2024 Ministerial Press Briefing organised to commemorate the first year of Governor Sanwo-Olu’s second term in office at the Bagauda Kaltho Press Centre, Alausa, Ikeja yesterday, Wesnesday, 22nd of May, 2024.
Prof Abayomi highlighted that the establishment of LSEMA is aimed at transforming the management and distribution of essential medicines as directed by the Federal Government for every state to set up a Drug Management Agency.
“The establishment of a Drug Management Agency is designed to address significant challenges in the supply chain by introducing a structured and technologically-driven approach to the procurement, storage, and distribution of health commodities”, he said.
The commissioner mentioned different benefits of the Essential Medicines Agency such as improved access to quality drugs, robust regulation of medicine flow, enhanced health planning data as well as increased internal revenue generation through efficient drug sales.
He further stressed the importance of recognising the value of collaboration, declaring that LSEMA would leverage on Public-Private Partnerships to enhance operational capacities.
“Recognising the value of collaboration, LSEMA will leverage Public-Private Partnerships to enhance operational capacities. This approach will combine public oversight with private sector efficiency and creativity, particularly in areas such as logistics and the day-to-day management of drug supplies”, Professor Abayomi stated.
