The Lagos State Safety Commission recently hosted its annual Staff Retreat focused on “Repositioning the Safety Commission as a Fully Regulatory Agency.”

In his opening remarks, Director-General of the Safety Commission Lanre Mojola extended a warm welcome to attendees and expressed gratitude for their support, dedication, and diligence.
Special recognition was given to the presence of the Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Special Duties and Intergovernmental Agency, Sesan Ogundeko.
While acknowledging the Commission’s accomplishments, Mojola emphasized the need to continue improving efforts to position the agency as a fully regulated entity.
He acknowledged the participants, who serve as both the management team and department leaders within the Commission, stressing the importance of collaboration and innovation in achieving this goal.

“In as much as I would commend the management for its contributions to the Agency’s achievements, which, without being economical with the truth, were actualised by all of us here.
But we need to be truthful to ourselves that we need to work harder to ensure that the Safety Commission is fully positioned as a fully regulated agency. Let’s build professionalism and ensure Lagos of our dream is achieved”, Mojola said.

He encouraged the agency, as ambassadors of safety, to embrace creative thinking and relentless innovation to elevate safety standards to new heights. He stated, “Let’s move from where we were last year to a new sphere.”

However, he cautioned against complacency and urged the Commission to continue pushing forward until Lagos achieves its safety and progress goals.
“Apart from safeguarding lives and upholding the standard of work and domestic abode, you as safety officers must ensure a very safe, secure, functional and productive Lagos State that all of us would be proud of, including our action and ever-ready Governor”, Ogundeko said.
He emphasised that “The Retreat is not just about theoretical discussions; it is about laying a practical roadmap for the Lagos State’s safety Commission to maintain its standard and be fully positioned as a regulated Agency. So you are expected to contribute positively to discussions to move the Agency forward”.
While declaring the retreat open, Permanent Secretary Sesan Ogundeko praised the Commission’s efforts and encouraged participants to actively engage, share their knowledge, challenge traditional thinking, and devise practical strategies to strengthen the Commission’s position.
During his lecture, Executive Director Jamiu Badmos of the Safety Advocacy and Empowerment Foundation emphasized that the Commission’s establishment was driven by the vision of fostering a society that prioritizes safety through behavior and attitude changes.
The ultimate goals are to enhance life expectancy, boost national productivity, improve quality of life, reduce accidents and illnesses, and cultivate a conducive environment for investment and sustainability.

Throughout the retreat, department heads within the Commission presented various papers, highlighting their respective accomplishments, addressing challenges, and proposing action plans to drive progress and innovation in the year ahead.
