LAGOS Support Genotype Foundation’s Campaign
The Lagos State Government has expressed its readiness to support the Genotype Foundation campaign against gender-based violence in the State. The Lagos State Government Agencies have promised to consistently support their cause by providing legal advice, protection, health and mental related counsel, and interventions when necessary.
The Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Folashade Jaji, who stated this in her address at an event organized by the Genotype Foundation with the theme “GBV/Sickle Cell Disorder: Where Do We Belong”, held on Wednesday at the Airport Hotel, Ikeja, said that parents must join forces with the Government in stamping out the menace from society.
According to her, “Parents must regularly educate girls and young women living with Sickle Cell Disorder (SCD) on their Fundamental Human Rights and what to do when anyone violates such rights. Everyone needs to stand up for human rights and GBV irrespective of religion, ethnicity, and status so that we can collectively eradicate gender-based violence in the society”.
Eko Hot Blog learned that the SSG, represented at the event by the Head of Public Affairs, Mrs. Olumuyiwa Ojelabi, noted that in as much as people without any disorder are falling culprit of the menace on a daily basis, individuals suffering from other health disorders, especially people living with Sickle Cell Disorder are at a greater risk of this existential threat.
While reiterating the commitment of the Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu led administration to the continuous implementation of various initiatives aimed at stamping out the heinous crime of Gender-Based Violence (GBV), she commended the unrelenting efforts of the Genotype Foundation for creating a platform to address the challenges of those living with Sickle Cell Disorder in Lagos State and Nigeria.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation in Lagos State, Mrs. Cecilia Bolaji Dada, who was represented by Mrs. Kasali of the Domestic Violence Unit, urged SCD patients, who are also survivors of GBV, to speak up and let society know what they are passing through.

She said, “Beyond all that we would say here today, I implore you to speak up on issues that are affecting you negatively, by speaking up, you would give society a better understanding of your plight and how they can help make this journey easier for you”.
In her remarks, the Executive Director of the Genotype Foundation and Convener of the event, Duchess Doris Gbemiloye, explained that the Foundation is a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) established to assist susceptible persons and communities discover their genotype and help those living with Sickle Cell Disorder manage and reduce the rate of crisis.
She commented that the event focused on sensitizing participants on the emotional, psychological, physical, and other forms of abuse Sickle Cell patients are additionally exposed to daily, adding that it was also inspired by some of the recent activities organized by the State Government to commemorate the Y2020 Lagos GBV Week and the16 days awareness initiative to end violence against women and girls.
