‘Zero Tolerance:’ Lagos Takes Action Against Obstructions Causing Flood

By Fikayo Babalola

Lagos has taken action against obstructions causing flood.

Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a bid to tackle flooding, the Lagos State Ministry of Environment and Water Resources has begun clearing obstructions in Okezie Ugbaja Street and surrounding areas in Okota, Oshodi-Isolo Local Government Area, ensuring the free flow of rainwater and mitigating flood risks.

In line with the Lagos State government’s pledge to achieve a cleaner Lagos and strictly enforce the ban on building on drainage right-of-way, the authorities have shifted from warnings to tangible action.

After issuing numerous warnings to offenders, the government has begun taking concrete steps to address the issue, demonstrating its unwavering commitment to a flood-free and sustainable environment.

Lagos State Commissioner of Environment, Tokunbo Wahab, took to his official social media handle (@tokunbo_wahab) to announce that, “Following several notices served, the operatives of the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps and other enforcement units of the Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources today commenced the removal of contravening structures built on the drainage channel in Okezie Ugbaja street and other parts of Okota, Oshodi – Isolo LGA.

“The Lagos State government @followlasg reiterates its commitment to ensuring a cleaner Lagos and zero tolerance to building on drainage right of way.

“The Lagos State Ministry of the Environment and Water Resources will remove any structure obstructing the free flow of rainwater and causing flooding in all parts of the State.”

The commissioner mentioned that any structure hindering drainage systems will be promptly demolished to mitigate flood risks and ensure a sustainable living environment across the state.
