Lagos Taskforce Intensifies Okada Crackdown, Impounds 470 Motorcycles

Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a resolute move to restore order on Lagos roads, the Lagos State Taskforce has intensified efforts to enforce the ban on commercial motorcycles (Okada) in restricted areas across the state.

A week-long operation spanning various strategic locations has resulted in the impoundment of 470 motorcycles, marking a significant stride in the ongoing endeavor to safeguard motorists and maintain sanity on Lagos highways.

The operation, which covered areas such as Berger, Fagba, Dopemu, Iyana Ipaja, 2nd Rainbow, Festac, First Gate, Alakija, Mile 2, Ilasan, Maroko, Lekki, Ikota, and Chevron, saw the taskforce confiscating the motorcycles from these restricted zones.

Addressing the exercise, the Chairman of the Taskforce, CSP Shola Jejeloye, stated that the consistent enforcement efforts aim to dispel the notion among Okada operators that the Agency lacks the manpower to consistently enforce the ban on illegal routes. “Any right-thinking Okada operator would at this point realize that it is not business as usual. Our operations have been precise and consistent, indicating no room for illegal Okada operators in Lagos State,” Jejeloye asserted.

The Chairman emphasized the unwavering commitment of the Lagos State Government to eradicate Okada operations in line with the master plan outlined in the THEMES PLUS Agenda.

He highlighted the inherent risks associated with motorcycle transportation and urged commuters to prioritize safer alternatives like the new rail line services and BRT bus services to avoid accidents or prosecution by the state government if caught.

Jejeloye further disclosed the taskforce’s concerted efforts to support the state government’s dedication to promoting a safe, secure, and habitable environment, fostering responsible transportation practices, and ensuring the well-being of all Lagosians.

However, he appealed to Okada operators still operating illegally to seek other legitimate means of survival or relocate out of the state, assuring Lagosians that the agency would carry on with its raids across all restricted areas, highways, and bridges to ensure full enforcement of the ban.
