Lagos Tasks Residents On Protection, Announces Plan To Construct New Roads

EKO HOT BLOG reports that the Lagos State Public Works Corporation (LSPWC) has called on the residents of the state to protect their roads in a bid to complement the government’s effort to rehabilitate road defects across the state.
The LSPWC General Manager, Olufemi Daramola, made the call while briefing newsmen on Monday.
Speaking, Daramola stated that the agency, as part of efforts to tackle gridlock and reduce travel time, had already worked on 385 roads across the state from January 2021 till date.
He added that the maintenance work carried out by the Agency were threatened by activities of residents and road users which cause avoidable damage to roads
Among the 385 roads, the LSPWC boss disclosed that 100 strategic roads were rehabilitated, while routine maintenance was carried out on over 268 roads and 17 roads were maintained using palliative approaches.
EKO HOT BLOG gathered that some of the strategic roads completed so far include Aye/Isolo, Mushin-Isolo LGA, Ileshomi Street, Oshodi LGA, Ado Badore, Eti-Osa LGA, Dailey Street, Shomolu LGA, Odogbolu Street, Surulere LGA, Keffi Street, Obalende, Lagos Island LGA, Jakande Estate Road, Alimosho LGA, Afolabi Street, Ikotun, Alimosho LGA, Old Otta Road, Powerline Junction, Orile Agege LGA and Etunreren Street, Ikorodu
When asked about the move to address the situation, Daramola said the corporation was “reinvigorating its advocacy campaign to sensitise the public on human causes of road damage, with a view to inspiring the people to take ownership of the roads.”

He added, “Habits such as burning of items on the road, discharge of wastewater on the road, removal of manhole covers, excessive axle load, cooking on roads, indiscriminate cutting of roads and dumping of refuse in drains are some of the reasons why roads cannot last their lifespan.”
On the Corporation’s preparedness to discharge its duties, even in the rainy season, the General Manager hinted that Agency has evolved a culture of working round the clock.

Daramola added that night operations have become permanent features of its operations, even though most maintenance activities still take place in the day time.
