  • Aims to enhance capacity of town planning officers

  • Collaboration will boost exposure and modern planning skills

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government has announced plans to collaborate with the Nigerian Institute of Town Planners (NITP) to boost training for its town planning officers.

The partnership aims to improve the skills and exposure of planning department staff, according to Physical Planning and Urban Development Commissioner Dr. Oluyinka Olumide.

“One of the ways to enhance the performance of staff is through training and retraining and that the collaboration with NITP would be quite instructive in this regard,” Olumide said after a visit from NITP’s national president.

The commissioner emphasized investing in human capital to equip employees with 21st century planning abilities. “We must challenge ourselves to do the same thing in different ways that will produce the desired best results,” he added.

Permanent Secretary Oluwole Sotire said the timing coincided with completing a review of the Alimosho Model City Plan. Sotire added that the Lagos Island Plan would soon reach its final stakeholder meeting.

NITP President Nathaniel Atebije applauded Lagos’ sustainability efforts and professional staff recruitment. However, he advised recruiting more planners and related experts to better implement development plans.

“The Institute was very much ready to support the training needs of the Ministry, saying that its rich training manual was quite instructive,” Atebije stated.

The collaboration will leverage NITP’s educational resources to build local planning capacity. Enhanced skills in areas like GIS mapping, climate resilience, and master planning will empower Lagos’ vision for a 21st century megacity.
