Lagos Wastewater Office Pledges Sustainable Solutions
Lagos State Wastewater Management Office (LSWMO) has reaffirmed its dedication to building reliable and sustainable wastewater management systems across the state.
Speaking on the agency’s ongoing efforts, General Manager, Engr. Adefemi Afolabi, explained that the LSWMO is responsible for conceptualizing, planning, and developing wastewater treatment infrastructure.
Its activities align with both the newly approved Lagos State Water Sanitation and Hygiene (WASH) Policy 2024 and the United Nations Sustainable Development Goal 6, which focuses on Clean Water and Sanitation.
“We are committed to the conceptualization and planning of fiscally viable investments in the state’s wastewater and faecal sludge management sector,” said Afolabi, noting that the agency continues to conduct thorough reviews and approvals of wastewater engineering reports, infrastructure designs, and specifications for various projects across Lagos.
In addition to overseeing project designs and planning, Afolabi mentioned that the LSWMO provides consultancy services to government ministries, departments, agencies, and private organizations.

This service encompasses the development of wastewater treatment infrastructure, managing existing treatment plants, and issuing necessary certifications and annual recertifications for all wastewater treatment facilities operating in the state.
He highlighted that the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law of 2017 mandates the office to monitor private and commercial properties—especially those with a population exceeding 50 or buildings taller than three floors—to ensure compliance with wastewater treatment system regulations.
Afolabi further stressed the importance of maintaining rigorous standards. “Laboratory analysis of effluent from government-owned treatment plants and the generation of baseline data on wastewater quality are critical to protecting our ground and surface water sources.”
Through these efforts, the LSWMO aims to promote environmental sustainability and safeguard public health.
Its Strategic Action Plan (2025-2030), recently unveiled, aims to enhance the quality of life for all Lagos residents by ensuring a cleaner, healthier environment for the future.
