LASEMA Sensitises Residents Of Flood Prone Areas On Preventive Measures

Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) has cautioned residents against setting up structures on right-of-way, especially in areas vulnerable to flood.

The agency made the charge during a sensitisation tour of the 20 local government areas and 27 local council development areas of the state.

The campaign was tagged: Early Warning on Flood Prone and Vulnerable Areas.

According to a statement by LASEMA on Sunday, the body also warned against blocking drainages with refuse.

The sensitisation, which kick-started at Ojokoro LCDA, Ijaiye-Ojokoro last Thursday, was led by the Permanent Secretary, LASEMA, Dr Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu.

Oke-Osanyintolu said the campaign was to create awareness from the grassroots on the prediction of the Nigerian Meteorological Agency on flooding for the year 2023 and also make possible preparations to forestall its devastating effects on Lagosians.

“Building flood resilience is our collective responsibility. Avoid setting up permanent structures, such as houses, shops, etc, on the right-of-way or in areas vulnerable to flood, such as low-lying areas or flood plain, near dams and reservoirs,” the LASEMA boss said.

He also warned that residents should desist from driving through flash floods to avoid being marooned in the flood as this is very detrimental to their lives and property.
