LASEPA Visits Lekki Port Construction Site

The Lagos State Environmental Protection Agency (LASEPA) has visited the construction site of the Lekki Deep Sea Port, located within the Lekki Free Trade Zone at Ibeju Lekki, to ensure that environmental guidelines are followed and mitigative measures are incorporated to avoid degradation of the environment.

The General Manager of the Agency, Dr. Folapo Fasawe, said the routine visit was necessary to ensure that the project adopted friendly environmental practices devoid of all environmental degradation and pollution, especially to the immediate host communities.

Her words: “As the police of the environment, the protection of the environment comes first at the outset of any construction project. Every stage of the construction process has a measurable environmental impact, therefore, our purposeful routine visit is aimed at mitigating and reducing environmental impacts produced during the construction phases and the future”.

“We must not wait for the completion of the project before we move in; our impact must be felt at all stages in order to ensure sustainable environmental best practices all through the duration of the construction stages”, Fasawe stated.

The monitoring exercise, which was carried out by the Lekki Zone team of the Agency, led by the Head, Mrs. Yetunde Atoyebi, was to ascertain the level of compliance to the State’s environmental protection guidelines and provide solutions to any detected unfriendly conduct.

The team was conducted around by Mr. Adura Ogundele and Arch. Mathew Oloyede, who gave a detailed explanation of the various stages of the ongoing construction and the action plan on site environmental management policy.
