EKO HOT BLOG reports that as part of its efforts to reduce domestic and sexual abuse in the State, the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency (DSVA) has started including primary and secondary school students in its Safeguarding the Rights of a Child (STRAC) initiative.

The Executive Secretary of DSVA, Mrs. Lola Vivour-Adeniyi, emphasised that children have a significant role to play in the STRAC program while speaking during a workshop held in Education District I, Agege.

She described STRAC as an interactive workshop designed to teach kids about their rights, responsibilities, body safety, sexual abuse, self-defense techniques, how to preserve evidence in cases of physical or sexual abuse, and ultimately how to speak up and report abusers in language that is age-appropriate for them.

The preventive course, which was led by trained peer educators with extensive knowledge of gender relations, socialization, dating violence prevention, and sexual assault prevention, will go a long way toward reducing child abuse incidences in Lagos, according to Mrs. Vivour-Adeniyi.

Her words: “The goal is to empower millions of children to ensure that they are able to prevent the occurrence of domestic and sexual abuse in Lagos State”.

In addition to verbally educating students about their rights and obligations, the Executive Secretary noted that STRAC textbooks developed by the Lagos State Domestic and Sexual Violence Agency can help children develop a love of reading, give them confidence, and act as a defense against all types of abuse.

Given the students’ engaged engagement in the program and how it has given them the confidence to speak up in all instances of abuse, she expressed pleasure with its success.
