LASG Cautions Residents On Fraudulent Estate Agents/Developers

-Lagos Government urges residents to be meticulous when seeking property to rent or buy

– Carry out due research before transacting with an unregistered estate agent

The Lagos State Government has urged the general public to be wary of fraudulent Estate Agents and Developers, stressing that the present administration is very concerned about the increasing dubious activities of some criminally-minded individuals.

According to a statement issued by the Office of the State Attorney-General/Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Moyo Onigbanjo, an estate agent allegedly collected the sum of N65 million from 262 prospective tenants at the Alapere, Ketu area of the State.

The State Attorney-General revealed that his office took over the prosecution of the case against the said Estate Agent on the 3rd of September, 2019, and promised that the accused shall be prosecuted to the full extent of the law.

The release, therefore, implored residents to be meticulous when seeking for property to rent or purchase by making necessary enquiries and carrying out due diligence before concluding any transaction with any agent, especially the unregistered ones.

This is necessary in view of the prevalence of these dubious schemes as evidenced by the growing number of cases being handled by the State regarding victims defrauded of millions of Naira by estate agents in the guise of letting out non-existing houses in Lagos State,” the statement said.

While affirming the State Government’s commitment to protecting the rights of citizens who are victims of such fraudulent acts, the statement emphasised that the Ministry of Justice will continue to collaborate with the various police formations in the State to ensure such cases are investigated swiftly and reports will be forwarded to the appropriate quarters for immediate prosecution.
