The Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) General Manager has said that there was no building collapse in the State as reported by some media houses and trending on social media recently.
This statement was made by the General Manager of Lagos State Building Control Agency, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe while reacting to the recent collapse of a canopy that claimed the life of an artisan during the renovation of a building occupied by Keystone Bank at Ikorodu Road, Palmgrove Bus Stop, Lagos, last week Saturday.
Engr. Kosegbe said that a 3-floor structure was undergoing renovation when the canopy caved in during installation. She added that the canopy which was being attached above the entrance door was an addition to the already standing structure and came down when the weight of the member could not be sustained by the support provided.

She stressed that the renovation of the building was initially flagged by a team of LASBCA Monitoring Officers, however, the Bank had the necessary permits for the ongoing works.
The weight of the canopy and falling debris fell on the artisan working beneath it, killing the worker.
The Agency boss stated that there will be the constant inspection of the renovation ongoing at other branches of the Bank in order to adhere strictly to the approval granted and will also take a step further to ensure that other owners/developers undergoing renovation work within construction codes and regulations.
She added that workers on construction sites should observe safety precautions to protect themselves during building construction.
Kosegbe further emphasized that this incidence could not be considered as a building collapse, but a fatal accident on a building site, since it was an attachment being introduced into the standing structure that gave way which in no way affected the serviceability of the building.
