Lagos State Government has successfully completed the Life Skills Economic Empowerment Programme, a groundbreaking initiative aimed at equipping retiring officers in the Lagos State Civil Service with essential skills for economic self-reliance.
The programme, held at the Women Development Centre in Agege, has been a cornerstone of Governor Babajide Olusola Sanwo-Olu’s administration, demonstrating the government’s unwavering commitment to eradicating poverty and empowering women in Lagos State.
Since its inception, the programme has empowered over 15,000 beneficiaries with a range of skills, including makeup and head tying, stoning, barbing, catering, throw pillow making, paint production, soap making, hairdressing, event planning, and decoration.
Participants also received start-up packs to foster economic independence.
Commissioner for Women Affairs and Poverty Alleviation, Hon. Bolaji Dada, highlighted the significance of the programme, saying, “This event marks the beginning of new opportunities for each participant. The skills acquired here offer pathways to financial independence and a brighter future for our retirees.”

The programme went beyond core training, providing participants with entrepreneurial skills, health talks, and enrollment in the Lagos State Health Insurance Scheme (LASHMA).
They also received training on environmental health and safety, ensuring their future business practices are safe and sustainable.
Hon. Dada expressed gratitude to Governor Sanwo-Olu for his passionate support and dedication to poverty alleviation and women’s empowerment in Lagos State.
She noted that the state government continues to support similar programmes across various communities, with ongoing training in Ikorodu, Agbado Oke-Odo LCDA, and upcoming initiatives in Ikeja and Ojo LGA.
The Permanent Secretary in the Ministry, Mrs. Oluyemi Kalesanwo, commended the facilitators and trainers for their expertise and commitment to the programme’s success.
She also praised the retiring civil servants for their willingness to learn and adapt, hoping that the programme has provided them with the tools necessary for success in their post-service endeavors.
