Lagos Govt Gears Up For Enforcement To Restore Drainage Right Of Way In Apapa
Eko Hot Blog reports that the Lagos State Government announced Monday as the commencement date for enforcement operations in Apapa to re-establish the three-meter drainage right of way for all its drainage channels.
This follows the expiration of notices and stakeholders’ meetings with property owners to voluntarily move fences within the drainage setback.

Speaking after an inspection tour, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Mr. Tokunbo Wahab, said, “The enforcement activities are coming after the expiration of notices and meetings with property owners to voluntarily move fences within the drainage setback.”
Wahab stated that the Ministry served contravention notices to buildings on the drainage setbacks, adding, “For several years, we have not been able to access the eight major collectors for maintenance due to encroachment, a major contributor to flooding in Apapa.”
The Commissioner assured that the State is determined to find a lasting solution to flooding in Apapa, directing enforcement officers to remove all contravening properties from the three-meter drainage Right of Way required by law, without cherry-picking properties.
During the inspection, the Commissioner visited Pele Wura, Abayomi, and Aerodrome Collector drains in Apapa.
Wahab also inspected Rock Drive in Lekki I, where individuals converted a residential area into a diesel depot. He directed immediate enforcement, emphasizing the risk of a major fire outbreak, and instructed LASEPA to seal the property while KAI officials demolished and arrested individuals found at the illegal shanties and towed away diesel trucks.

The Special Adviser on Environment, Mr. Olakunle Rotimi-Akodu, said, “The Government is determined to find a realistic solution to flooding by embarking on all-year-round drainage cleaning measures.” He added, “Residents must also clean tertiary drains regularly while the Ministry works on linkages to secondary and primary channels.”
