The TG/PS Education District III, Dr. Mrs. Olufolayimika Abiose Ayandele has been at the forefront of outstanding leadership in the education sector of Lagos. In fact, she is a good example of women in governance driving change through her very many innovative programs since she assumed office.

All over Africa, there is a low representation of women in leadership positions and governance and in order to bridge these gaps, various women organizations have strongly advocated for the inclusion of women as they have the capacity to create far-reaching innovations at the decision making tables.

Dr. Ayandele has proven beyond reasonable doubt that she is an empathetic and proactive leader, sensitive to the plights of youths and children out of school in her jurisdiction.

It is a fact that women, youths, and children are at the receiving end of crises like COVID-19 pandemic, it is not out of place to invent programs that will help to cushion the harrowing effects of the stay at home order on students.

One of such innovations is the invention of the Toll-Free Counselling Line and Students Worksheets, where students can call in to talk to a counsellor at no cost and to engage them in home teaching and learning of Mathematics and English Language.

Dr. Mrs. Ayandele added another feather to her beautiful cap by successfully launching a student’s based program tagged “Launching of Students Worksheet and Toll-free lines for Counselling”.

The virtual launching took place on the famous meeting application, zoom, today 10th June, 2020.

The virtual meeting kicked off with the Education District III anthem.

In her opening remarks, the TG/PS noted that the goal of the toll-free counseling program is to bridge the gap, support students, and have free and direct access to counselling services.

” The vices in COVID-19 have seen a lot of students abused. Call us anytime. Reach a counsellor without paying “, she said.

Dr. Ayandele also used the medium to appreciate the immense contribution of Lagos state Governor, Mr. Babajide Sanwo-Olu, for swinging into action to make sure students learn via online, radio, and television platforms.

“This is in line with the THEMES agenda of Lagos state government which the District also keyed into by engaging in online teaching of Mathematics and English, ” She said.

Special Guest of Honor and Chief Launcher, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo, began her remarks by expressing satisfaction towards the endearing anthem rendered at the beginning of the program organised by Education District III.

She noted that the Anthem was spot on, thereby, singling out the aspect of academic excellence and quality leadership which centers around teaching and learning in the classroom.

She also noted the global peace advancement which she believes has placed Lagos state on the world map in terms of peaceful co-existence.

” The students will one day lead, we have Governors, Commissioners, Ministers among them. They will lead us when we are retired and we must develop outstanding skills, create an atmosphere for them to thrive and excel.

“I am the Daughter of a Mathematics teacher but I found mathematics boring but my mother had to do all her best for me to pass the subject, ” she said.

She also corroborated the notion that students are going through a lot in these times.

She frowned at the rise in criminal cases such as rape and the fact that people do not believe in the level of community spread of COVID-19.

“Horrific things are happening, students are going through a lot like rape, marital abuse, hunger, and emotional distress. These issues have increased 500%”, she said.

The Education Commissioner commended the outstanding planning and implementation of the toll-free counselling line through teamwork and collaboration.

She described it as innovative, creative, empathetic, and proactive.

In her final remarks, Mrs. Folashade Adefisayo hinted at the launch of learning tablets in Epe and Ibeju-Lekki areas donated by First Bank Plc.

The tablets which will replace low-level technology, radio learning platform, will be distributed to teachers and students.

While cutting the ribbon to launch English and Mathematics Worksheets, the honourable commissioner expresses how proud she was and admonished the TG/PS to continue to be a dynamic, innovative, and proactive leader.
