LASG Makes Case For Strong Educational Foundation For Students

The Lagos State Government has advocated an educational system that provides a strong foundation for students to excel in their academic pursuits at all levels.

Secretary to the State Government, Mrs. Folashade Jaji made the call at the opening ceremony of a two-day Southwest Education Summit organised by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria Commission (DAWN) and United Kingdom’s Department for International Development (DFID) at the Continental Hotel, Victoria Island, Lagos.

Mrs. Jaji explained that education raises people’s productivity and creativity in addition to promoting businesses and technological improvements.

She added that today’s educational system must be fashioned out to give every student tools that will make him or her effective in any field of choice.

Jaji averred that the Government kick-started the revolution of getting the expected learning outcomes from students by making education and technology the third and fundamental pillar of the T.H.E.M.E.S development agenda to deliver a Greater Lagos.

The State, according to her, has introduced the EKO EXCEL initiative – Excellence in Child Education and Learning – by training 2,400 primary school teachers on the use of modern-day technology to enhance teaching efficiency.

She commended the DAWN Commission and DFID for providing a platform to collectively solve the problem.

She also charged the participants to come up with practical 21st-century strategies that will remove the factors inhibiting schools from achieving expected learning outcomes, not just in the western region but in the country.

The Director-General, DAWN Commission, Mr. Seye Oyeleye remarked that the summit was organised to enable effective educational system in the Southwest region and other States of the Federation by sharing common practical experiences and collectively offering solutions.

Dr. Olatunde Adekola of the Education Global Practice of the World Bank spoke on using data to determine how the Southwest is fairing and how to improve education service delivery in the States.

Discussions and presentations at the summit included planning and budgeting for education, issues from institutional capacity in the Southwest educational systems and the use of evidence to sustain ongoing reforms.
