In a bid to elevate Lagos State’s healthcare and medical education, Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration is spearheading the creation of a stand-alone medical university.
This initiative, driven by the Ministries of Tertiary Education, Health, and the Lagos State University College of Medicine (LASUCOM), aims to establish a top-tier medical institution in the state.
During a recent stakeholder meeting in Ikeja, the Commissioner for Tertiary Education, Tolani Sule, emphasized the need for a medical university to address the growing demands for healthcare professionals and to enhance the state’s healthcare system.
“We aim to ensure Lagos has a medical university capable of bridging the existing gap in the training of medical personnel and improving the healthcare delivery system in the state,” he said.
Sule highlighted the current administration’s dedication to aligning LASUCOM with global standards, noting significant investments in the institution.
However, he acknowledged that challenges remain due to the state’s increasing population, rising student admissions, expanding infrastructure needs, and the emigration of healthcare workers.
