Lagos State Government has pledged its support towards the maiden Lagos Island Fair to be organised by the Lagos Island Connect (LIC) to showcase entrepreneurs and their products/services at the grassroots.

Speaking at the meeting, Akande stated that the Fair will be supported by the Ministry to ensure the success of the event designed to expose businesses at the local level to the outside world, starting with the Lagos Island division of the State.

Her words: “This is a laudable project which will in a way introduce business owners in the Lagos Island division to the world. The concept will take the State higher and the event will be of global value to all. Going to the Local Government Areas to assist their businesses will also improve our GDP”.

Akande affirmed that the Fair, which will be organised with the support of the Ministry of Commerce, Industry and Cooperatives (MCIC), the Office of Sustainable Development Goals and Investment (OSDGI) and other stakeholders, holds tremendous benefits to the local economy, assuring that the Government support, which is key to promoter’s confidence, would be given.

“Our Ministry is ready and very interested in the project. The T.H.E.M.E.S Development Agenda of Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration seeks functional public-private collaborations. We are hopeful that we can use the platform to identify more creative talents so we can give our technical support to them. We plan to also take up an exhibition stand at the Fair. We have to get down to the grassroots”, she stated.

The Director, of the Commerce Department in the Ministry, Mrs. Helen Adesina said the Fair will complement various programmes already being implemented by the State Government to promote indigenous businesses such as MSMEs Exclusive Fair, Made in Lagos Fair and Eko MSMEs Fashion Hub among others.

The Leader of the Lagos Island Connect (LIC), Ms. Yemisi Ransome-Kuti, explained that the Lagos Island Business Fair would be geared towards solving the challenges of businesses in the relevant Local Government Area throughout the State.

“I have been part of implementing several policies of which the major challenge is cascading them to the grassroots. This was why we conducted a needs assessment and identified the challenges of businesses in Lagos Island to determine what can be done to assist them through collaborations.

Already, we have reached out to organisations such as GIZ, Main One, LSDPC, Access Bank, Ecobank, Embassy of Netherlands and Nigerians in Diaspora, amongst others, and we are confident that this initiative will strengthen governance and help entrepreneurs at the local levels”, she said.

She also revealed that organisations such as Google would be conducting masterclasses during Business Clinics at the Fair, noting that they will need the Ministry to help collect businesses’ data within the State.
