LASG Sounds Alarm on Environmental Pollution in Solid Minerals

Lagos State Government has urged stakeholders in the solid minerals sector to adopt responsible mining operations.

The call to action was made at a recent stakeholders’ forum organized by the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources in Alausa, Ikeja.

Chairman of the Lagos State House Assembly Committee on Energy and Mineral Resources, Hon. Sabur Oluwa, emphasized the importance of compliance with relevant laws and regulations governing the sector.

He stressed that stakeholders must support government initiatives aimed at protecting the state’s critical assets and ensuring a safer environment for all residents.

Delivering the keynote address, Special Adviser to the Governor on Mineral Resources, Okanlawon Olowu, highlighted the crucial role of proper coordination in mining operations to protect the environment.

The forum, themed “The Menace of Sand Spillage on Our Roads and Its Environmental Impact,” aimed to discuss strategies for responsible mining practices and sustainable development of Lagos’ mineral resources sector.

Olowu emphasized the significance of mineral resources in powering infrastructure development and sustaining existence.

However, he noted that irresponsible mining practices can have devastating environmental consequences.

The meeting provided a platform for stakeholders to harmonize responsible management of mining and dredging operations, ensuring environmental stability and sustainability.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Engr. Abiola Kosegbe, urged participants to support the administration’s drive towards promoting sustainable mining and minimizing related environmental impacts in Lagos State.

The forum brought together top government officials, traditional rulers, and representatives from various associations in the mineral resources sector, all contributing to the discussion on moving the sector and the state forward.
