LASG Takes Action Against Open Defecation in Berger

Published

on

Lagos State Government has vowed to prosecute individuals who engage in an unhygienic practice, particularly along the Berger Expressway.

The government’s sanitation operatives recently cleaned up the faeces that littered the median of the expressway, and now it’s time for enforcement.

Permanent Secretary Gaji Omobolaji, Office of Environmental Services, led an advocacy exercise to sensitize the public about the importance of proper sanitation and the health implications of open defecation.

He emphasized that the enforcement team, comprising the anti-open defecation squad, Kick Against Indiscipline (KAI), and other agencies, would work in shifts to apprehend and prosecute offenders.

Gaji expressed dismay at the shameful practice of open defecation, especially on roads and medians, and stressed that it requires a lasting solution.

He warned that anyone caught would face the full wrath of the law, hoping that it would serve as a deterrent to others.

However, the government is not just about enforcement; it’s also about providing alternatives.

The proprietor of a Total Filling Station at Berger Expressway has donated five toilet rooms for public use, and another eight-room toilet facility is operational at Berger bus garage.

Gaji acknowledged that more toilets are needed and assured that plans are underway to construct more, with water treatment plants and recycling facilities to preserve the ecosystem.

The fight against open defecation requires a collective effort, and Gaji urged residents to prioritize the use of clean and accessible toilet facilities.

He emphasized the importance of educational programs that raise awareness about proper sanitation and its impact on public health and the economy.

The health implications of open defecation are enormous, and the government is determined to address the fundamental issues that affect the safety and future of the state.

Gaji called on all residents to join hands with the government to ensure a cleaner, healthier, and sustainable environment for present and future generations.
