She said the Lagos State Cooperative College was established purposely to provide high-skilled manpower for running of co-operative activities in the State to prevent any fraudulent practices.
“The Cooperative College was established to enshrine the principle of prudence, transparency and accountability in the cooperative movement, to encourage the act of cooperation, increase the knowledge and skills of cooperative participants towards reducing fraud and conflict within the Societies in Lagos State”, the Commissioner stated.
Dr. Akande added that the Medium and Small Enterprise sector of the economy constituted about two-thirds of employment and half of the GDP to the Nation’s economy, noting that this was the reason why the government needed to monitor and strengthen the manpower to run the sector.
The Commissioner, however, reassured that the Ministry would continue to provide necessary assistance to the management of the College to ensure that the institution delivered on its mandate of increasing the capacity of the cooperative movement in the State.
The Provost of the College, Mr. Akorede Ojomu, informed that the matriculation event was a major milestone in the history of the Lagos State Cooperative College, being the first of its kind to be organised after the inauguration of the Governing Council of the College in June 2020.
He said the Professional Diploma Course in Cooperative Management Study programme was a three-semester course designed to boost the capacity of the students at rendering efficient services to the movements and cooperators.
Ojomu declared that the College had invested immensely in the human capacity and other infrastructural facilities to deliver on the mandate of building skilled manpower for the cooperative society.
He, therefore, enjoined the students to avail themselves of the opportunity provided by the College, especially in the use of Information Communication Technology facilities that had made learning easy and uninterrupted in the face of COVID-19 induced restriction on physical contact.

“This is in addition to its mission to build the capacity of cooperators towards sustainable socio-economic growth through the development of highly skilled manpower with cutting edge technology, which has spurred the College into positioning itself to deliver on its mandate”, Ojomu added.
The Governing Council Chairman, Mr. Oyebowale Raji in his lecture, titled “Will Power”, enjoined the new students to develop their inner strength, set targets and be resolute to enable them to succeed in their endeavours.
