Eko Hot Blog reports that the General Manager of the Lagos State Office for Disability Affairs (LASODA), Mrs. Adenike Oyetunde-Lawal, has expressed commendation for the Management of Lagos State University (LASU) for establishing a Disability Support Unit aimed at providing assistance to students facing various forms of disabilities.
During a courtesy visit by a team from LASU’s Disability Support Office, led by Deputy Registrar Ms. Afolami Arojojoye, Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal highlighted the urgent need for educational institutions across the state to establish disability desks.
These desks would facilitate the inclusion of Persons with Disabilities (PWDs), ensuring they have equal access to education.
“I commend the Lagos State University for this initiative; it is a great development. The overall objective is to create an inclusive learning environment where every student can thrive. It will encourage parents of children with disabilities to see the possibilities of getting their children educated, thereby improving their lives.” she said.
Emphasizing the importance of inclusive policies, Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal stressed that creating equal access and opportunities for all students, regardless of their disabilities, is crucial.
Such interventions would enable students with disabilities to acquire knowledge effectively, similar to their peers.
The General Manager pointed out the prevailing accessibility challenges faced by many PWDs and asserted that providing an enabling environment is key to fostering inclusivity in education.
She further urged the need for awareness campaigns among students and lecturers, advocating for well-equipped resource centers catering to the diverse needs of students with disabilities.
“You need a well-equipped resource centre for your students; Braille, Jus-enabled laptops for students with visual impairments, sign language instructors for those with hearing impairments, magnifying glasses for those with albinism, ramps, rails, and other tools for the physically challenged.”
Mrs. Oyetunde-Lawal reiterated LASODA’s commitment to supporting the cause of Persons with Disability, expressing willingness to refer, support, and partner with Lagos State University in enhancing the Disability Support Unit.
Ms. Afolami Arojojoye, leading the LASU team, shared the university’s plan to upgrade the Disability Support Unit and sought input and support from LASODA. She highlighted the institution’s commitment to catering to the needs of students with disabilities.
The meeting also included the participation of LASODA officials, including Barr. Babatunde Kazeem Safiu, Head, Legal Unit; Mrs. Omolade Sonubi, Director, Admin & HR; Mrs. Folusho Adeolu, Director, Monitoring, Evaluation, and Orientation; Mrs. Eniola Olukanni-Abokhai, Director, Medical Aids, Rehabilitation, and Appliances, alongside other officials and students with disabilities from Lagos State University.
