LASTMA Condemns Unruly Behaviour Of Officers

The Lagos State Traffic Management Authority (LASTMA) has condemned the unruly behaviour of one of its traffic officers trending online in a video showing an altercation with a commercial bus conductor at Maryland, Lagos.

The General Manager, LASTMA, Mr. Olajide Oduyoye, stated that the rules of engagement for all officers with members of the public do not include engaging in squabbles with traffic offenders as stated in the Law that guides the Agency’s operations.

Oduyoye further said that the circumstances surrounding the video has been thoroughly investigated and it was discovered that the driver and conductor of the commercial bus contravened a section of the Lagos State Traffic Law by leaving the bus door open while in motion with the conductor hanging on the vehicle.

He explained that the Bus Driver and Conductor are serial offenders notorious for their confrontational attitude with traffic officers noting that whenever caught contravening the law, they resort to whipping up sentiments to attract public sympathy against traffic officers.

Oduyoye, however, maintained that the Lagos State government has zero tolerance for any untoward behaviour by public servants, especially officers physically attacking motorists and will, therefore, sanction the LASTMA staff according to the civil service regulations, while the commercial bus operators will be prosecuted for contravening the law.

While urging road users in Lagos to adhere strictly to the traffic law of the State, he enjoined the general public to refrain from preventing LASTMA officials from carrying out their duties because enforcement is principally meant for their safety and security.
