LASU Commences Fact-Checking Society

  • The Lagos State University (LASU) has commenced a fact-checking society.

EKOHOTBLOG reports that a fact-checking society has been launched in the Lagos State University (LASU), Ojo, after a one-day fact-checking training facilitated by Dubawa fellows for student journalists.

A renowned Professor of Mass Communication, Lai Oso, educated the participants on the effect of misinformation, and disinformation in society.

The former Dean of LASU School of Communication, while stressing the roles of the youths in curbing fake news, cautioned the students against the sharing of unverified information.

EKOHOTBLOG reports that a Dubawa fellow, Lateef Sanni, spoke extensively on how to fact-check, tools used, procedures, and styles of writing fact-checking stories.

On his part, a recent winner of the Dubawa fellowship grant and a student of LASU School of Communication, Sultan Quadri, discussed the opportunities in fact-checking for beginners and his experience as a fact-checker.

Also speaking at the event, the convener, Dr. Ganiyat Tijani Adenle, a lecturer with LASU and a Dubawa fellow, spoke on the importance of fact-checking.

Adenle, EKOHOTBLOG reports, proposed the launch of the fact-checking society, which was unanimously accepted by the students.
