Eko Hot Blog reports that, in a commendable move towards social empowerment, the Lagos Waste Management Authority (LAWMA) has joined forces with the Lagos State Residents Registration Agency (LASRRA) to distribute LAG ID cards to over 2,000 sweepers.
The event, held at LAWMA Headquarters in Ijora Olopa, marks a significant step in recognizing and enhancing the lives of sanitation workers.
Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, the Managing Director/CEO of LAWMA, expressed his enthusiasm for the collaboration, recognizing the profound impact the LAG ID cards would have on the daily lives and financial transactions of the sweepers.
He stated, “We are incredibly proud to collaborate with LASRRA to equip our hardworking sweepers with these invaluable ID cards. These cards transcend mere plastic; they represent a gateway to multiple benefits that will empower them and elevate their social standing.”
Dr. Gbadegesin highlighted the multifaceted advantages of the LASRRA cards, emphasizing their role as legitimate forms of identification, providing confidence in everyday interactions, and fostering a sense of belonging within the community.
Beyond identification, he stressed that the cards would unlock opportunities for sweepers, including access to healthcare services and the ability to apply for loans, thus promoting financial inclusion.
Mrs. Bilikis Abiola, the General Manager of LASRRA, explained that the initiative aimed to create a unique database of sanitation workers, enabling them to access free healthcare services with the LAG ID cards.
She emphasized the importance of knowing the genuine workers and providing health insurance coverage for the sweepers.
Seyi Olanrewaju, the Team Lead and Group Head of Payment Products at Sterling Bank, commented on the financial aspect of the initiative, stating, “We have a concrete conjunction with the Lagos State Government, particularly LASRRA for the provision of cards layered with a lot of opportunities.”
He highlighted the functionalities of the LASRRA cards, comparing them to ATM cards and underscoring the benefits, including access to BRT, loans, and various financial facilities.
The distribution and activation of the LAG ID cards were the highlights of the event, symbolizing a collaborative effort to uplift sanitation workers and provide them with tools for a better quality of life.
