LAWMA Managing Director, Dr. Muyiwa Gbadegesin, stated that illegal sorting, dumping, and trading of recyclable waste degrade the city’s aesthetics and pose serious environmental hazards.
According to a public notice from LAWMA, individuals and businesses engaging in such activities will face strict enforcement measures, including facility shutdowns and legal penalties.
Citing Sections 85 and 86 of the Lagos State Environmental Management and Protection Law, 2017, Gbadegesin stressed that depositing recyclable waste in unauthorized locations is strictly prohibited. He warned that property owners permitting such activities risk revocation of property rights and other legal consequences.
He urged residents to utilize only licensed recycling facilities and registered waste collectors to ensure proper waste management.
Enforcement and Evictions Begin
In line with its zero-tolerance policy on environmental violations, LAWMA, in collaboration with the Lagos State Environmental Sanitation Corps (LAGESC), recently dislodged squatters and illegal recyclers from the Ijora-Olopa underbridge. Gbadegesin stated that similar enforcement exercises would continue across the state.
LAWMA has also intensified night surveillance to catch offenders dumping waste illegally. Several arrests have already been made, including Engineer Akinsola, who was caught unlawfully disposing of waste along Egbeda-Akowonjo Road.
He falsely claimed to be a police officer, but investigations revealed that his landlord had instructed him to dump the waste at the road median.
Similarly, over 25 individuals, including six vehicle owners, were apprehended for illegal dumping at Abati Primary School, Shasha Road. Another offender, Fatima, was caught dumping waste near Micom Bus Stop and will be prosecuted.
